Val Mahony, born May 23, 1952, passed away on January 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of care, skill, and unforgettable laughter.
Val lived a life centered on service and connection. As a nurse, he dedicated himself to caring for others with compassion, patience, and steady resolve. He worked at Stillwell Memorial Hospital for 31 years. His work was more than a profession—it was a calling, and those he cared for felt his sincerity and strength.
A passionate reader, Val had a deep love for books. Reading was both a comfort and a joy for him, and he delighted in sharing ideas, stories, and recommendations with those around him.
Val was also a talented mechanic, known for his ability to fix nearly anything. He approached problems with determination and ingenuity, never afraid to get his hands dirty. Family and friends relied on his skill and his willingness to help whenever something needed repair.
Fishing was one of Val’s greatest joys, and he took every chance he could to be near the water. Whether casting a line in quiet reflection or sharing the experience with others, fishing brought him peace and happiness.
Val’s humor was loud and showy, filling rooms with laughter. His bold jokes, quick wit, and animated storytelling were a defining part of who he was, creating long-lasting effects and countless memories for those who knew him.
Val was preceded in death by his father, Denton Thomas Mahoney; his mother, LaVelle MacKay; his brother, Duane Karl Mahoney; his brother-in-law, Robert Henry Jones II; and his sister-in-law, Denise Mahoney.
He is survived by his siblings Gerald, Stuart (Dot), Myrna, Wendell (Cheryl), and Steven; as well as his sister-in-law, Jan Mahoney. He is also survived by his children Valarie LaVelle Mahoney-Kong, Samuel Duane Mahoney, Mike Turner, and Cherokee Ward (Jason Ward), and their mother Brenda Willis, as well as Tiffany Cook.
Val is further survived by his grandchildren, Lian Kong and Tierney Simmons (Brett Simmons), and his great-grandchild, Calea Simmons.

Val Mahony will be remembered for his generous heart, sharp mind, capable hands, and unmistakable presence. His impact will continue to live on through the many lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the laughter he left behind.
